Narrow, wide, tall, or short and in shades of silvery blue to green to yellow, evergreen shrubs bring four-season appeal and must be included in any quality landscape design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis brings many questions each year, and I\u2019ll highlight some of our favorites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamaecyperis obtusa &#8211; Hinoki Falsecypress:<\/strong> The obtusas have flattened sprays of arborvitae-like foliage. There are dozens of varieties available to the trade. These are the ones we try to carry every season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. obtusa \u2018Aurea\u2019:<\/strong> Full-size golden variety with spreading, graceful branches. The outer foliage is golden with a green interior. Can grow up to 12&#8243; per year. Use as a specimen or in a group as a focal point.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_0530_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"obtusa aurea\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_0530_683\" data-id=\"1278\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_0530_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis obtusa &#8216;Aurea&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. obtusa \u2018Nana Aurea&#8217;:<\/strong> Dwarf version of &#8216;Aurea&#8217;. Slow growth rate of 1-6&#8243; per year. Maintains golden color all year long. High impact in a small package!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1375_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"obtusa nana area\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_1375_683\" data-id=\"1270\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1375_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis obtusa &#8216;Nana Aurea&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: 0px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>C. obtusa \u2018Crippsii\u2019:<\/strong> Broadly conical with spreading branches and pendant sprays of bright, yellow foliage. Best in sunny or partially sunny areas. Good winter color. Excellent specimen. Growth rate up to 12&#8243; per year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/731_8407_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"obtusa crippsii\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"731_8407_683\" data-id=\"1274\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/731_8407_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis obtusa &#8216;Crippsii&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. obtusa \u2018Gracilis\u2019:<\/strong> Broadly pyramidal and compact, the dark green lacy foliage is elegantly swirled. The rate is moderate, averaging 6-12&#8243; per year. It can reach 5-10&#8242; in ten years. Stunning specimen plant.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1371_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"obtusa gracilis\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_1371_683\" data-id=\"1269\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1371_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis obtusa &#8216;Gracilis&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. obtusa \u2018Nana Gracilis\u2019:<\/strong> Dwarf version of &#8216;Gracilis&#8217;, growing 1-6&#8243; per year. The rich green color makes it a focal point in any landscape design. An irregularly globose form that is beautiful pruned or natural. A favorite of bonsai artists.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_0528_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"obtusa nana gracilis\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_0528_683\" data-id=\"1267\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_0528_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamacyparis obtusa &#8216;Nana Gracilis&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: 0px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamaecyparis pisifera &#8211; Threadleaf Falsecypress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>C. pisifera \u2018Filifera Aurea Nana\u2019<\/strong>: This beauty is not a genuine dwarf, but a slow growing cultivar that can reach a height of six feet, though that is not common here in Michigan. Bright greenish-yellow to golden whip-like leaves and branches that grown into a haystack mound, this popular plant is hard to keep in stock! &nbsp;\u2018Golden Mop\u2019 is a mutation of \u2018Aurea Nana\u2019 and a true dwarf. Other cultivars we carry are \u2018Golden Charm\u2019, \u2018Golden Mop\u2019, \u2018King\u2019s Gold\u2019, &nbsp;and \u2018Lemon Thread\u2019. We stock them all, but not all the time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1378_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"filifera aurea nana\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_1378_683\" data-id=\"1271\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1378_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chamaecyparis pisifera &#8216;Filifera Aurea Nana&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>We are always looking for plants that will make your design stand out and these varieties deserve your attention:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juniper chinensis \u2018Daubs Frosted\u2019:<\/strong> Light golden-yellow new growth matures to soft feathery bluish-green. We will have some this year on standard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1387_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"juniper daubs frosted\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_1387_683\" data-id=\"1273\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1387_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Juniperus chinensis &#8216;Daub&#8217;s Frosted&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thuja plicata &#8216;Whipcord&#8217;<\/strong>: Hard to believe that this is an Arborvitae! &#8216;Whipcord&#8217; is a dwarf selection of Western Red Cedar. It&#8217;s a slow grower, getting only about 3&#8242; wide in ten years. The unsual whip-like branchlets give it a soft, mop-like appearance, making this a fun accent plant in the landscape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1382_683.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thuja plicata whipcord\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"000_1382_683\" data-id=\"1272\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/000_1382_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thuja plicata &#8216;Whipcord&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>In closing, evergreen shrubs are an important element in any good landscape design.
