No, it&#8217;s COLOR TIME!&nbsp;Mums. Burning bush. Maple trees! You can probably name a dozen fall color plants without even thinking about it. But what about choosing from some of the lesser-known plants that also shine every autumn? Here are my top ten favorite fall color plants that may not be on your radar.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hydrangea quercifolia\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"IMG_3683_683\" data-id=\"1720\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_3683_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oakleaf Hydrangea<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrangea quercifolia and cultivars: The large, rough-textured leaves are especially striking as they turn shades of red and purple every fall.<\/li>\n<li>Viburnum x juddii: Beloved for it&#8217;s sweetly-scented spring flowers, this medium-sized shrub has great burgundy-purple fall color accented by blue to black berries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Itea\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"IMG_9501_683\" data-id=\"1714\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9501_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Itea<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Itea virginica cultivars: This medium-sized native shrub deserves to be planted more often. The orange, red and burgundy fall color is outstanding and is extremely long lasting.<\/li>\n<li>Epimedium cultivars: An underused perennial tolerant of dry shade that gets brilliant red to purple fall colors.<\/li>\n<li>Amsonia hubrectii: This North American native perennial grows to about 3&#215;3&#8242;. The fine, feathery foliage turns a striking golden-yellow in the fall.<\/li>\n<li>Clethra alnifolia \u2018Hummingbird\u2019: Usually planted for the amazingly fragrant flower spikes in mid-to-late summer, this smallish shrub turns a gorgeous golden yellow each fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fothergilla\" width=\"683\" height=\"455\" title=\"IMG_9575_683\" data-id=\"1713\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9575_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fothergilla<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fothergilla \u2018Mount Airy\u2019: This is a handsome 3-5\u2019 shrub that gets wonderful fall color in hues of red-purple, orange and yellow.<\/li>\n<li>Amelanchier: OK, so this one is not that obscure but it has to be in my top ten.<\/li>\n<li>Vaccinium hybrids: These ericaceous shrubs (best known are blueberries) will surprise you with their beautiful red-orange fall color.<\/li>\n<li>Panicum virgatum cultivars: \u2018Shenandoah\u2019 and \u2018Hot Rod\u2019 are two that turn beautiful red or burgundy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Panicum\" width=\"683\" height=\"1025\" title=\"728_0534_683\" data-id=\"1715\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/728_0534_683.jpg\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Panicum<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kim Roth\" width=\"600\" height=\"175\" title=\"roth\" data-id=\"3015\" src=\"\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/roth1.png\" style=\"\" data-width=\"600\" data-height=\"175\" data-init-width=\"600\" data-init-height=\"175\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;and I don&#8217;t mean cider or donuts.
