What do Jaws<\/em>, Jimmy Hendrix and emergency sirens have in common? They all include the \u2018Devil\u2019s Trill\u2019! \u201cWhat is this?\u201d you may ask. Well, it is \u2018Satan in music\u2019 and was once banned by the Catholic Church for being a \u201cdemonic combo\u201d! The Violin Sonata in G minor <\/em>by Tartini or the Devil\u2019s Trill<\/em> Sonata is the notes F & B played together and they clash so much it gives us an unnatural feeling of foreboding. Some people twitch when they hear these keys played together.<\/p><\/div>

Police sirens are a perfect example. They are typically the notes C and G flat \u2013 can you hear them in your head? They clash \u2013 trouble is coming. You will find the \u2018Devil\u2019s Trill\u2019 in movies like The Exorcist<\/em>, The Shining<\/em> and of course Jaws<\/em> (da-dum\u2026 da-dum; Can you see the shark coming? The music gets faster as the shark gets closer\u2026 da-dum. P.S. Did you know that it\u2019s a Tuba in Jaws?). Or maybe you are into the Rolling Stones (\u201cSympathy for the Devil\u201d), Metallica ,(\u201cEnter the Sandman\u201d Fun note: this is my cup of tea!) Led Zepplin, (\u201cThe Rover\u201d, \u201cSince I\u2019ve Been Loving You\u201d) or, of course, \u201cPurple Haze\u201d (Jimmy plays the B-flat while bass man Redding plays an E, da-dant\u2026 da-dant, in the opening riffs) These groups use the demonic combo!<\/p><\/div>

You get the idea but what has this to do with plants \u2013 nothing. What does this have to do with Kim \u2013 lots! We receive a lot of trucks from growers. Some are small \u2013 some are large. I try my hardest to get out and look at every truck and the material. But I must admit there are some nurseries that as I am about to look into the back of the truck and *wham*, a \u201cDevils Trill\u201d!! I also hear it when we open the houses up in the spring and, of course, when someone walks into my office and says, \u201cI need a favor!\u201d It is usually Jaws<\/em> that plays in my head at work, but, nevertheless, it is in my head as a sign of foreboding! (Usually, I internally yell at myself for thinking that way \u2013 especially when the load is beautiful or the favor is easy!)<\/p><\/div>

The \u2018Devil\u2019s Trill\u2019 itself was composed by Giuseppe Tartini. An Austrian dude from the late 1600\u2019s. He has two claims to fame \u2013 He was the first ever owner of a Stradivarius Violin and his Sonata in G Minor or \u201cThe Devils Trill\u201d. The Sonata was basically the first \u201cDevil Went Down to Georgia\u201d style song (and story).<\/p><\/div>

I will admit I also get it in my head before I step into the doctor\u2019s office, dentist, and even sometimes as I about to put on the news. Funny thing is that in those moments the trill I hear is \u2018Purple Haze\u2019, I didn\u2019t know it had a name, but it does and a cool one at that. (Not really sure where I learned the name or why.)<\/p>

A couple of last Devils Trill footnotes.<\/strong><\/p>

  • Did you watch the Sopranos<\/em>? The season finale? Because they purposefully used Journey\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believing\u201d and purposefully ended it at the \u2018Devil\u2019s Trill\u2019 just to make it even more irksome.<\/li>
  • It is the hardest piece of music to play on a violin.<\/li>
  • If Giuseppe lived in our age, he would have been in a major Heavy Metal Band. <\/li><\/ul><\/div>
