But alas, we&#8217;re in Hydrangea chaos, yet again. Lately, it seems like every hydrangea has an evil stepbrother trying to knock him off. I must tell you that we carry way too many and there are thousands more to choose from. (That may be a slight exaggeration.) Oh, where to start! (I am only listing what you should expect Christensen\u2019s to carry)<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">Let\u2019s start with arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea). Arborescens flower on new wood. So, prune if needed and they will re-flush.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">\u2018<strong>Annabelles&#8217;&nbsp;<\/strong>remain a staple and Christensen\u2019s sells hundreds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\"><strong>Incrediball\u00ae<\/strong> is considered an improved \u2018Annabelle\u2019 with bigger flowers and stronger stems. They are tolerant of both clay and alkaline soils as well as salt and shade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">The&nbsp;<strong>Incrediball\u00ae Series<\/strong> includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Incrediball\u00ae Blush<\/strong>, a reblooming ruby red and pink \u2018Annabelle\u2019. Overall the shrub will get 5&#215;5 but has a stout look to it. It is listed as having great disease resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s move on to the \u201cBig Leaf Hydrangea\u201d (macrophylla).<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, there has been a slew of new varieties added to the reblooming <strong>Endless Summer\u00ae<\/strong> Collection. Some have been around for a couple of years but are just now getting their 15 minutes of fame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">The collection includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Endless Summer\u00ae The Original<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Bloomstruck\u00ae<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Twist-n-Shout\u00ae<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Summer Crush\u00ae: <\/strong>raspberry-red, unaffected by soil alkalinity and one of the shortest at 18-30\u201d tall<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Pop Star\u00ae<\/strong>: blue or pink, another one at 18-30\u201d, a lacecap<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9499\" width=\"683\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"455\" data-init-height=\"455\" title=\"HydESPopStar-362-11981\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/HydESPopStar-362-11981.jpg\" data-width=\"683\" data-height=\"455\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 455;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Making it\u2019s Christensen\u2019s debut in 2026 is <strong>Dream Cloud\u00ae<\/strong> with their white, mop-head flowers and on a 3-4 x 3-4\u2019 plant.<\/p>\n<p>Before we head into the paniculatas, I would like to highlight a few other lacecaps from the Tuff Stuff\u00ae series. Christensen\u2019s has carried these for a few years now and they have held up very well in the nursery. The original Tuff Stuff\u00ae is a 2-3\u2019 tall rebloomer with blue or pink flowers. Christensen\u2019s will also carry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Tiny Tuff Stuff\u2122 <\/strong>is quite small at 18-24&#8243; x 18-24&#8243; with blue or pink flowers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Tuff Stuff Ah-Ha\u00ae<\/strong> is 3&#8242; x 3&#8242; with blue or pink flowers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Tuff Stuff Top Fun\u00ae&nbsp;<\/strong>is 3&#8242; x 3&#8242; and purple with pink flowers BUT it also has red stems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9501\" width=\"683\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"683\" data-init-height=\"683\" title=\"hydrangea-serrata-tuff-stuff-top-fun-4\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/hydrangea-serrata-tuff-stuff-top-fun-4.jpg\" data-width=\"683\" data-height=\"683\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 683;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK, now we can discuss paniculatas.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrangea paniculata <strong>Bobo\u00ae<\/strong> are The <em>O.G.&nbsp;<\/em>panicle hydrangea, no evil stepbrothers in sight. <strong>Bobo\u00ae<\/strong> are 24-30 x 36-48\u201d, with strong stems, a rounded habit, white flowers and look like they belong on a macrophylla (big round ball flowers) and not a paniculata (usually more of cone shape). The flowers are also sterile, so they just bloom and bloom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Hopefully your coffee cup is full &#8211; here comes the mess.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Limelight\u2019<\/strong> has been around forever. Reaching 8&#215;8 with green flowers that age pink, red, burgundy. For now, these are still available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, <strong>Limelight Prim<\/strong><strong>e\u00ae<\/strong> is looking to knock off \u2018Limelight\u2019. <strong>Primes\u00ae<\/strong> still have the green flowers that age to red and pink tones. But <strong>Limelight Prime\u00ae<\/strong> are a little shorter at 6\u2019 x 5\u2019 with stronger stems and bloom earlier, giving you a longer season of color.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9507\" width=\"220\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"147\" data-init-height=\"456\" title=\"hydrangea-limelight-prime-9\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/hydrangea-limelight-prime-9.jpg\" data-width=\"220\" data-height=\"147\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 456;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Little Lime Punch\u00ae<\/strong> is the middle brother, reaching 5\u2019 x 5\u2019 but I think it holds its shape better with very strong stems.<strong> Little Lime Punch\u00ae<\/strong> flowers emerge green but age to a rich red with pinks and whites mixed in. Also, the flowers start the color change at the bottom and work up the flower stalk giving an array of colors before autumn.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9508\" width=\"337\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"337\" data-init-height=\"683\" title=\"hydrangea-paniculata-little-lime-punch-1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/hydrangea-paniculata-little-lime-punch-1.jpg\" data-width=\"337\" data-height=\"337\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 683;\" mt-d=\"0\" ml-d=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At 3-5&#8242; x 3-5&#8242;, \u2018Limelight\u2019s baby brother can be found in its dwarf version, <strong>Little Lime\u00ae<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Little Lime\u00ae<\/strong> has the same green flowers but age more red.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9509\" width=\"337\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"318\" data-init-height=\"644\" title=\"little_lime_hydrangea-20\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/little_lime_hydrangea-20.jpg\" data-width=\"337\" data-height=\"318\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 644;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Quick Fire\u2019 <\/strong>Hydrangea and all its children bloom about 1 month earlier than other paniculatas, providing a little longer show. &nbsp;They come in at 8\u2019 x 8\u2019, start flowering white then age pink with great fall color.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Little Quick Fire\u00ae<\/strong> is one of my favorites and a dwarf of \u2018Quick Fire\u2019, at only 3-5\u2019 x 3-5\u2019. The flowers are white, age pink and the red stems stand out on the plant.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9511\" width=\"337\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"450\" data-init-height=\"911\" title=\"hydrangea-quick-fire-fab-11\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/hydrangea-quick-fire-fab-11.jpg\" data-width=\"337\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 911;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know why. But with a name like \u201cFab\u201d I thought <strong>Quick Fire Fab\u00ae<\/strong> was small \u2013 it is not. It is around 7\u2019 x 6\u2019. Unlike their parent, <strong>Quick Fire Fab\u00ae<\/strong> flowers are pink mopheads then age to red than white. Their stems were also bred to be stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on to another standard &#8211; <strong>Pinky Winky\u00ae<\/strong>. \u201cPinkys\u201d come in at 6-8\u2019 x 6-8\u2019 with white flowers that age pink. The flowers can also be up to 12\u201d long making for a very showy plant<\/p>\n<p>Now there is also <strong>Pinky Winky Prime\u00ae<\/strong>. It is touted as having much stronger stems than its parent. Otherwise, it\u2019s similar to the original.<\/p>\n<p><em>Phew, almost to the end. (You thought I was joking!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Puffer Fish\u00ae<\/strong> Hydrangea\u2019s claim to fame is it has so many flowers you cannot see the plant! According to Proven Winner, &#8220;Puffers&#8221; are a Bobo\u00ae but puffier on a compact 3-5\u2019 x 3-5\u2019. The flowers are white and age green on strong stems.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9516\" width=\"529\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"353\" data-init-height=\"456\" title=\"puffer-fish-hydrangea-3\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/puffer-fish-hydrangea-3.jpg\" data-width=\"529\" data-height=\"353\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 456;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Powerball\u00ae <\/strong>is one of the newest from Proven Winners. <strong>Powerball\u00ae<\/strong> has mop head flowers on strong stems, starting lime, aging white and pink. It is also a solid rebloomer with a size of 3-6\u2019 x 3-6\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, there are still more. We didn&#8217;t even discuss &#8220;Oakleafs&#8221;. I&#8217;ll cover those later this summer.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always on the look-out for new varieties that will grow well in Michigan. would like to highlight a few other lacecaps from the Tuff Stuff\u00ae series. Christensen\u2019s has carried these for a few years now and they have held up very well in the nursery. The original Tuff Stuff\u00ae is a 2-3\u2019 tall rebloomer with blue or pink flowers. The flowers are also sterile, so they just bloom and bloom.&nbsp;<\/p><p><em>Hopefully your coffee cup is full - here comes the mess.<\/em><\/p><p><strong>\u2018Limelight\u2019<\/strong> has been around forever. Reaching 8x8 with green flowers that age pink, red, burgundy. For now, these are still available.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv-columns\" style=\"--tcb-col-el-width: 689.969;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26d9ec1d\"><div class=\"tcb-flex-row v-2 tcb--cols--2\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26d9faa6\" style=\"\"><div class=\"tcb-flex-col\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26eee859\" style=\"\"><div class=\"tcb-col\"><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26d8f9e0\" style=\"\"><p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26db0d81\">However, <strong>Limelight Prim<\/strong><strong>e\u00ae<\/strong> is looking to knock off \u2018Limelight\u2019. <strong>Primes\u00ae<\/strong> still have the green flowers that age to red and pink tones. Unlike their parent, <strong>Quick Fire Fab\u00ae<\/strong> flowers are pink mopheads then age to red than white. Their stems were also bred to be stronger.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26fb910f\" style=\"\">\t<p>Moving on to another standard - <strong>Pinky Winky\u00ae<\/strong>. \u201cPinkys\u201d come in at 6-8\u2019 x 6-8\u2019 with white flowers that age pink. The flowers can also be up to 12\u201d long making for a very showy plant<\/p><p>Now there is also <strong>Pinky Winky Prime\u00ae<\/strong>. It is touted as having much stronger stems than its parent. Otherwise, it\u2019s similar to the original.<\/p><p><em>Phew, almost to the end. (You thought I was joking!)<\/em><\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26fe29f3\" style=\"\">\t<p><strong>Puffer Fish\u00ae<\/strong> Hydrangea\u2019s claim to fame is it has so many flowers you cannot see the plant! According to Proven Winner, \"Puffers\" are a Bobo\u00ae but puffier on a compact 3-5\u2019 x 3-5\u2019. The flowers are white and age green on strong stems.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e27039eda\" style=\"\"><span class=\"tve_image_frame\"><img class=\"tve_image wp-image-9516 tcb-moved-image\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9516\" width=\"529\" data-init-width=\"683\" height=\"353\" data-init-height=\"456\" title=\"puffer-fish-hydrangea-3\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christensensplantcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/puffer-fish-hydrangea-3.jpg\" data-width=\"529\" data-height=\"353\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e2703b2af\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 683 \/ 456;\"><\/span><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26fe17e2\" style=\"\">\t<p><strong>Powerball\u00ae <\/strong>is one of the newest from Proven Winners. <strong>Powerball\u00ae<\/strong> has mop head flowers on strong stems, starting lime, aging white and pink. It is also a solid rebloomer with a size of 3-6\u2019 x 3-6\u2019.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19e26fe0430\" style=\"\">\t<p>Believe it or not, there are still more. We didn't even discuss \"Oakleafs\". I'll cover those later this summer.<\/p><p>I\u2019m always on the look-out for new varieties that will grow well in Michigan.
